This screen field reference describes the following:

General tab

Use this tab to specify various system preferences for earthwork jobs.

Field

Description

Font Size

Click to set the font size for the elevation labels you digitize. If you use too large a font size, the elevation point numbers will run into each other on the drawing, making it difficult to read.

Enable Audio Feedback

Select this checkbox to play sounds on your computer as you digitize quantities in the Takeoff. You must have a sound card properly installed, speakers to play sounds, and the volume for WAV files set to an audible level to hear sounds from ProContractor. For more information on setting up audio feedback, see Sounds Do Not Play.

Backup on Window Change

Select this checkbox to create a backup copy of the job in the Jobs folder each time you switch focus between tabs in the Manage Earthwork Estimates screen.

ProContractor will create a file in the same folder as the job file you are working on titled EarthworkBackup.top. Viewpoint recommends that you manually copy this file and rename it before opening another job if you want to retain a backup copy. When you open another job and switch tabs within that job, the EarthworkBackup.top is overwritten.

Auto-Save Every [X] min

Click to set the frequency in minutes at which ProContractor will save the job.

Start New Jobs in High Resolution Mode

Select this checkbox to open new jobs be in high resolution mode by default. High resolution provides more accuracy during takeoff. High performance provides faster digitizing performance. You can change the mode at any time. See Digitizing Modes: High Resolution vs. High Performance.

Additional Takeoff Settings (unlabeled)

Trace Line Smoothing

Click to set the number of points to record when you use the Trace tool to digitize a line. The smaller the number, the more points will be digitized for a line. However, the more points you digitize for a line, the longer it will take to calculate quantities. Viewpoint recommends that you set the Trace Line Smoothing field to 1.

Auto Scroll

Select this checkbox to enable scrolling of the takeoff tab when the mouse cursor is moved to an edge of the sheet.

Auto Scroll Increment

Click to set the distance from the edge of the sheet the mouse cursor must be before ProContractor will auto scroll.

Default Converted Image Folder

Click and browse to the default folder for converted images. Select the folder for converted images and click OK.

Go Settings - Use the fields in this area to specify preferences for using the Go tool during digital takeoff to automatically digitize a contour line. These settings allow you to control the balance of accuracy and performance when using Go.

Line Length Limit (points)

Defaults to 1000. If needed, enter the maximum length of a line created by the Go tool in points or click to increase or decrease the number of points. Valid values are 50 to 2,500.

Interval between Points (pixels)

Defaults to 10. If needed, enter the maximum interval between points in pixels that the application uses to determine if it has double-backed on the line and should stop digitizing or click to increase or decrease the number of pixels. Valid values are 10 to 50.

Dashed Line Spacing (pixels)

Defaults to 8. If needed, enter the maximum distance in pixels that the application will look for the next point on the line or click to increase or decrease the number of pixels. Valid values are 5 to 100.

Loop Back Detect Count (points)

Defaults to 10. If needed, enter the number of points at the end of a line that the application uses to determine if a line has looped back on itself or click to increase or decrease the number of points. Valid values are 5 to 25.

Straight Line Detect Count (points)

Defaults to 30. If needed, enter the number of points the application uses to determine if it is following a straight horizontal or vertical line that could be a boarder or click to increase or decrease the number of points. the application checks that the latest point, a previous point the number of points specified away, and a point between the two to determine if they are in a horizontal or vertical line; in which case, the application stops digitizing the line. Valid values are 5 to 50.

Churn Threshold Count (tries)

Defaults to 500. If needed, enter the number of times the application should attempt to find the next point on a line before stopping or click to increase or decrease the number of attempts. Valid values are 200 to 2,000.

Reset Defaults

Click the button to reset all Go Settings to their default values.

Align to Image

Align to Image

Select the option to indicate the default level of sensitivity when using the Align to Image tool during digital takeoff. When you digitize a drawing with the Align to Image tool activated, the application aligns the annotation to the closest black pixel on the drawing. You can override the default setting while digitizing using keyboard shortcuts.

  • Low - Aligns the annotation to the black pixel closest to the mouse click. New points are not added to the annotation if they are too close to the last point in the annotation. Does not align to black pixels between mouse clicks, which means it does not align to curves on the drawing. Use this setting if you have performance concerns. This setting is the least accurate; however, it may increase performance. The keyboard shortcut for this setting is Shift + [1].

  • Medium - Aligns the annotation to black pixels slightly to the left or right of the mouse pointer. Does not align to black pixels between mouse clicks, which means it does not align curves on the drawing. This setting is less accurate than High or Extreme; however, it may increase performance. The keyboard shortcut for this setting is Shift + [2].

  • High - Aligns the annotation to black pixels between the last mouse click and the current mouse pointer, which means it does align to curves on the drawing. The annotation point is centered on the line. Crossing lines are ignored. This setting is selected by default and is more accurate than Low and Medium. Use this setting with the Trace tool. The keyboard shortcut for this setting is Shift + [3].

  • Maximum - Aligns the annotation to black pixels between the last mouse click and the current mouse pointer, even when clicking on individual points; which means it does align to curves on the drawing. Use this setting with the Point tool. This setting is the most accurate; however, it may reduce performance. The keyboard shortcut for this setting is Shift + [4].

Disable Vector Import

Disable Vector Import

Select the checkbox to disable vector functionality for all newly imported PDF files containing vectors. If you want vector functionality enabled for all newly imported vector PDF files, leave the checkbox deselected.

Cloud Delay

Cloud Delay

Defaults to 0. If you are using a Cloud-based installation of ProContractor, enter the delay between the user machine and the Cloud in milliseconds.

Tip: By entering the Cloud delay, you eliminate backtracking issues that may occur when performing takeoff and the Align to Image tool is set to Medium, High, or Maximum sensitivity. To determine the delay in milliseconds, do the following:
  1. Open an MS-DOS command prompt window.
  2. Type ping viewpoint.com. You will receive several "Reply from..." messages that indicate the delay in milliseconds.
  3. Choose the highest number from the "Reply from..." messages and round it to the nearest multiple of 10. For example, if the highest value returned in the "Reply from..." messages is 58, round the value to 60.
  4. Enter the rounded value in the Cloud Delay field. If you continue to notice backtracking issues, increase the previously entered value by 10 until the issues no longer occur.

Digitizer Buttons tab

Use this tab to set the action of each button on your stylus or puck.

You can select an action that is specific to the Earthwork module or an action that is the same as pressing a key on your keyboard. For example, you could set the first button on the side of the stylus to be the same as clicking Finished on the speedbar.

The buttons that appear in the list of buttons are set by the digitizer drivers you installed with the digitizer. The Digitizer Buttons tab may list more buttons that the stylus or puck you are using has. If you set functions for buttons that are not available on the stylus or puck, the function is ignored.

To change the number of buttons that appear for the stylus or puck, you must change the settings for the digitizer. See Install and Configure the Digitizer Driver for more information.
