About Microsoft Office with RDP

RDP users may notice that Vista calls up its own instances of Microsoft Office applications. This is because your remotely-hosted instance of Vista requires use of applications that are in the same location.

While using your Vista application over RDP, the Vista client runs on the hosted server and not your workstation. Microsoft Office also runs on the same hosted server so it is available for use with Vista.

During the normal course of your work, Vista opens Microsoft Office applications on the hosted server, even if you already have a local version open. You don't have to do anything differently, just be aware that these remote versions are required and that you may see multiple MS Office instances open at the same time.

You must use the remote versions of Microsoft Office applications when performing tasks such as:

  • Create and Send
  • Drag and Drop to/from Outlook
  • Exporting reports
  • Exporting the grid

Note that, in the taskbar, the icon for the remote application displays the remote desktop icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
