A soil boring is a sample taken from a job site that defines the depths of different substrata materials. A boring is used to help you identify the different materials you will work with at a site, as well as estimate the amount of reusable and unusable materials found on the site.
When you Digitize Soil Borings, you will specify the strata materials found and the thickness of each of those materials.
Example Soil Borings Digitization Scenario
You may receive boring logs that have different lists of materials for each boring. To accommodate this, you must create a master list that includes all substrata materials. Some of these may even be duplicated.
- Boring 1: 1 ft sand, 2 ft clay, 4 ft shale, 6 ft rock
- Boring 2: 2 ft loam, 1 ft clay, 6 ft rock
- Boring 3: 1 ft clay, 1 ft rock, 4 ft shale
Since these borings all contain different combinations of substrata material, you would create a Master Boring List with the following substrata materials listed in this order:
- sand
- loam
- clay
- rock
- shale
- rock
- Boring 1: 1 ft sand, 0 ft loam, 2 ft clay, 0 ft rock, 4 ft shale, 6 ft rock
- Boring 2: 0 ft sand, 2 ft loam, 1 ft clay, 6 ft rock, 0 ft shale, 0 ft rock
- Boring 3: 0 ft sand, 0 ft loam, 1 ft clay, 1 ft rock, 4 ft shale, 0 ft rock
If you select Enter Data using Elevations, layers with no material should use the elevation of the layer above it like this:
1 ft sand at 180 ft, 0 ft loam at 180 ft, 2 ft clay at 178 ft, 0 ft rock at 178 ft, 4 ft shale at 174 ft, 6 ft rock at 168 ft.

Estimating aligns the takeoff line to the closest black pixel. You can set the default sensitivity of the tool in Preferences. You can press and hold Shift to turn Align to Image on and off as you digitize a drawing. Align to Image can be used with the following:- Compensate
