Create or Edit Discussion Containers

Modified: 25 Jun 2026 Viewpoint For Projects Project Management Help

Create a discussion container to store your project discussions or update a container that you already created.

Discussion containers can only be created at the project level and cannot be created within a document container. You can have more than one discussion in the container.

  1. Right-click on a Project and select New > Discussion Container or right click on the container and select ConfigureThis Container.
The Discussion Folder Configuration Form appears.
  2. Enter or edit the Name for the discussion.
  3. Add or edit the description and auto naming code (if you have one).
  4. Enter or change the optional information for the Timescale Properties.
    • The DaysFrom field is required, but defaults to seven days.
    • Decide if the due date will be editable.
    • Decide if you want VFP to email reminders about the due date to the recipients.
  5. Enter or edit the optional Recipient information for users that you want to automatically be pulled into all new discussions in this container.
    • Select the Search magnifying glass icon to see a list of users who can be added to or removed from the discussion. Use the Search field to filter the list to make it easier to find the recipient.
    • Select the + plus sign to use the advanced search.
    • Select the Private checkbox if you wish to make the container private and visible to only the selected recipients.
  6. Select the optional Email drop box checkbox if you want to email items directly to the discussion container. You will need the drop box email address and the status of the item. Change any other options as necessary.
If this option is selected, send an email to the email drop box address to automatically create a new discussion.
  7. Select optional Mandatory Fields if you want to add or remove mandatory fields to the discussion. The fields inherit the properties of the container. Set the fields you want to make mandatory to True.
    • Select the + plus sign for the Field Preferences to configure the mandatory fields.
    • To change the requirement from what is in the container, clear the Inherit checkbox and set the the Mandatory field to True or False.
  8. Choose Finish when you are done configuring the discussion container.
  9. Select Close.
VFP adds a discussion folder to the container. The folder is marked with text bubbles. Open the folder or email the drop box to initiate a discussion.
