Managing CAD Xrefs for Trimble Connect & BIM

Context When sharing AutoCAD drawings or Stabicad 3D models via Trimble Connect, architectural backgrounds (Xrefs) often fail to load. This happens because the cloud cannot read "Absolute Paths" (e.g., P:\Project\...) from your local server. To ensure the construction site and BIM partners see the full context (Architecture + Installation), you must configure Xrefs to use Relative Paths.
Prerequisites
• The Installation Drawing (.dwg) and the Background Drawing (.dwg) must reside within the same main project folder structure.
Step 1: The Golden Rule of Folder Structure
Trimble Connect mirrors your folder structure.
• Do not link a file from a completely different network drive.
• Do: Ensure the Xref is in a subfolder of your current project (e.g., ..\ReferenceDrawings\Arch_01.dwg).
Step 2: Convert to Relative Paths (Automated)
Stabicad provides a tool to fix pathing issues automatically.
1. Open your installation drawing in Stabicad for AutoCAD.
2. Go to the StabiTOOLS palette.
3. Navigate to the Family Tools tab (or check the Modify tab depending on your version).
4. Click Convert to relative paths.
    ◦ Function: This tool scans all attached Xrefs and images. If they are located within the project folder structure, it strips the drive letter and converts them to relative paths (e.g., .\Xref\background.dwg).
Step 3: Manual Verification (AutoCAD)
1. Type XREF to open the External References palette.
2. Select your architectural background.
3. Check the Saved Path section.
    ◦ Bad: P:\Projects\2025\Hospital\Xref\Arch.dwg (Absolute)
    ◦ Good: ..\Xref\Arch.dwg (Relative)
Step 4: Uploading to Trimble Connect
When uploading to Trimble Connect (via the web or StabiBASE sync), you must ensure both the Parent File (Installation) and the Child File (Xref) are uploaded.
• If you only upload the installation drawing, the link will be empty in the web viewer.
Pro Tip: 2D to 3D BIM Conversion
If you use the Stabicad BIM module to convert single-line systems into 3D solids, the Xref becomes even more critical.
• In 2D: The Xref is just lines.
• In 3D: The Xref represents the physical constraints (Walls/Ceilings).
• Best Practice: After converting your system to 3D, upload the file to Trimble Connect. Ensure the architectural Xref is also uploaded so the field team can see the 3D pipes in the context of the building model.
