Context: System Type vs. System Classification Users often want to assign the specific systems to which a family belongs directly in its connector (for example, specifying that the gas pipe connector near a boiler automatically uses the system type "W5411_Aardgas").
The Revit limitation Unfortunately, it is not possible to assign a System Type within the family. You can only enter the System classification (such as Hydronic supply, Hydronic return, etc.) in the connector. By selecting the correct System classification, Revit automatically selects the system type that was chronologically first present in the project when modeling from the connector.
Workarounds To ensure that the correct system type is selected anyway, you can use one of the following two workarounds:
Workaround 1: Remove unused system types Remove the other system types with the same System classification so that the correct one is always selected. Please note: The last system type of a system classification cannot be deleted. This allows you to change which system type becomes the default for a particular system classification in your template.
Workaround 2: Use a Model Group
  1. Place the family in your project.
  2. Place pipes on the family connector and choose the correct System Type for these pipes.
  3. Make a Model Group of the family including the pipes.
  4. Use the Model Group instead of the separate family in your project.
  5. Place an instance of the group, ungroup it, and then continue modeling. The correct system type will be maintained.
