How to: Batch update or change XREF paths across multiple DWG files using Autodesk Reference Manager

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open the Windows Start Menu > Programs > Autodesk > AutoCAD 20xx > Reference Manager.
  2. Click Add drawings and select the .dwg files whose XREF paths need to be updated.
    Tip: In the Browse window, use Tools > Find… to automatically search for drawings contained within subfolders.
  3. When prompted, choose Add all xrefs automatically regardless of nesting level. The main manager window will display.
  4. Navigate to View > List by Reference type.
  5. In the left pane, select the reference type Xrefs.
  6. Sort the list by the Saved Path column and select the group of drawings you wish to update.
  7. Click the Find and Replace button.
  8. In the Find saved path field, enter the path segment you wish to replace (e.g., the old server prefix or absolute folder path).
  9. In the Replace with field, enter the new replacement path segment.
  10. Verify the Status column to confirm path validity:
    • 🟢 Resolved (Green checkmark) indicates a valid path.
    • ❓ ? indicates an unresolved path.
  11. Click Apply Changes to write the updated paths directly into the .dwg files.
  • In the Find saved path field, enter the path segment you wish to replace (e.g., the old server prefix or absolute folder path).
  • In the Replace with field, enter the new replacement path segment.
  • Verify the Status column to confirm path validity:
    • 🟢 Resolved (Green checkmark) indicates a valid path.
    • ❓ ? indicates an unresolved path.
  • Click Apply Changes to write the updated paths directly into the .dwg files.
