How to Upgrade a Revit worksharing project to a newer version.

Background:
The file format of Revit (.rvt file) is version specific. A Revit model cannot be edited in an older Revit version than the one the model was created in. Because Autodesk and Stabicad support a limited number of versions, it may happen that a Revit model needs to be updated to a newer Revit version. This article contains a number of tips that apply to a worksharing project.

Solution:
1. See the link below for the tips Autodesk gives about upgrading a Revit project.
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/simplecontent/content/upgrading-revit-projects-to-new-version.html

2. Important points for worksharing are:
  1. Make sure everyone has synchronized their changes to the central model and then make sure everyone has closed the model.
  2. Always create a backup of the model or make a backup of the folder where the central model is registered.
  3. After upgrading the central file, each modeller needs to create a new local file.
  4. Follow the steps in the video below to upgrade the central file and maintain registration in Stabibase.

Steps in video:
  1. Double-click this model in Stabibase. Select the option "Create and open new local file.
  2. Select this model in Stabibase > Right-click > properties. Go to tab Revit > Select the newer Revit version as Revit platform.
  3. Click File > Save as> Project. Enter the new name (Central-2018.rvt) and overwrite the current model.
  4. Open Revit (the latest version). Go to File > Open and select the model from step 2. Select the option "Detach from central" and click Open. Then select the option "Detach and preserve worksets". The model will now be upgraded.
  5. Rename it to the current central model in Stabibase. (Example: Rename Central-2017.rvt to Central-2018.rvt)
  6. Make a copy of the project (blue folder) in StabiBASE where the central model is registered. (as backup)
  1. If a Family cannot be updated, you can open the families separately and save them in a new Revit version. However, these problems do not occur often.
