Folder Permissions

Folder permissions can be managed only in Trimble Connect for Browser. Folder permissions applied in the Browser application are enforced in all other Trimble Connect applications.

Permission Levels

Multiple user groups can work on one project in Trimble Connect for Browser. With folder permissions, access to folders can be set based on user groups, individual user accounts, or to all project members.

Tip: Permissions applied to groups override the default access applied to all project members.
Your access to a given folder is based on the permission level and your role within the project.
  • Full Access - you can open, edit, delete, or move any files within the folder; add files or new folders to the folder.
  • Read Only Access - you can see the folder and can open all files within the folder.
  • No Access - folders and files are hidden.
Note: Note: Users that have No Access to a folder will not be able to see Views, ToDos, or attachments made from any files in that folder (even if the View/ToDo is shared/assigned to them).
Tip: If a user is in more than one group, the greatest level of access is applied to the user.

For example, if one group has full access to a folder, while another group is granted read-only access, any users in both groups have full access to the folder.

Managing Subfolder Permissions

To manage permissions across the folder hierarchy in your project, use the Permission Overview screen.

When you manage large folder structures, the permission set at the child and the parent folder level can be different from one another.

By default, subfolders automatically inherit permissions of their parent folder, and can also define additional permissions.Permission changes on any folder hierarchy level take effect immediately.

If you need to define permissions on a subfolder that are more or less restrictive than the parent folder, you can disable inheritance on the subfolder by clearing the Inherit from parent folder checkbox.

The Folder Permissions dialog shows both direct and inherited permissions, but you can modify only direct permissions on the folder.

Change Folder Permissions

You can change specific folder permissions.

To change folder permissions:
  1. Open your project in Trimble Connect for Browser.
  2. Go to the Explorer page.
  3. Select a folder you want to view the permissions for.
  4. Select Edit folder permissions. Alternatively, select Edit from the Permissions section in the detail panel.
    A window opens.
    1. Add specific access to users, to groups, or to all project members.
    2. Enter their names into the Access for specific users and groups field.
    3. Change access by selecting the access dropdown (shown next to their name).
  5. Select Save.

Restrict Root Folder Permissions

Project Administrators can restrict uploading files or creating new folders directly under the root folder.

To restrict folder permissions at the root level:
  1. Open your project in Trimble Connect for Browser.
  2. Go to the Explorer page.
  3. Select the overflow menu in the top right of the page.
  4. Select Folder permissions.
    1. Add specific access to users, to groups, or to all project members.
    2. Enter their names into the Access for specific users and groups field.
    3. Change access by selecting the access dropdown (shown next to their name).
  5. Select Save.
It is not possible to define the root folder's permissions as No Access. If you don't want any users to access the root folder, remove all users from the project.

View Folder Permissions

You can view permissions.

To view folder permissions:
  1. Open your project in Trimble Connect for Browser.
  2. Go to the Explorer page.
  3. Select a folder you want to view the permissions for.
The detail panel opens on the right side.
The folder permissions are displayed at the bottom of the detail panel.

Guidelines for Folder Permissions

Access to folders is based on the permission level and role within the project.

Users with full access to the parent folder can restore the files; this ability is not limited to Project Admins only.

Please see Comment Permissions for a further breakdown of permissions.
