Export to File

Use this function to export your model data to various file formats which you can then import into other programs.

See Supported File Formats for the file types you can export. Some of the types listed have topics with format-specific export details:

Consider exchanging data seamlessly using the Connectors (Upcoming Release).

  1. Select Output > Export to File.
During the export process, the active model is referred to as the source and the file as the target.
The Export to file tool opens.
  2. In the Task section, you may select a template for the import.
Novapoint provides a set of predefined templates that are available when creating a task.
  3. In the Selection section, select Select Features to choose the feature (types) that you want to export from the model.
You can select by feature types and by location (for example, you make a polygon to define the area).
  4. In the Format section, select the file format for the export.
A settings dialog displays for any format that has writer settings. See the sub-pages for format-specific settings.
  5. In the CRS section, you may select Change CRS if you want to a different Coordinate Reference System for your output file. For more information, see CRS Transformation.
The transformation of the CRS is run after the conversion of the features.
  6. In the Conversion Rules section, select Select Rules if you want to define conversion rules. For more information, see Conversion Rules.
An example of when this feature is useful is when an object-oriented model consists of features like GuardRail, CarriagewayEdge, and Fence that need to be converted into file items, such as CAD layers.
  7. In the Preview section, you may select Preview to see the data after it is converted but before it is exported.
A temporary plan window displays the data that has been successfully converted (and transformed, if a coordinate transformation was triggered).
If nothing shows up in the Preview of created features plan window, the reason might be:
    • No conversion rule was selected.
    • The conversion rules selected did not match the information in the selected files.
  8. In the Destination section, select a destination for the exported file.
    • If you want to upload to Trimble Connect for Browser, select Projects. Choose a suitable project and file name.
    • If you want to store the file in ProjectWise, select ProjectWise. You will assign the destination after the task is completed.
    • If you want to store the file in local storage, select File and choose a suitable location and file name.
  9. Select Finish to run the export to file.
If you select Finish without using the Preview option, the information is exported directly. This may save time during the export of large data.
When you do a file export you get a task (export task) in the process model that documents what you did, including which file you exported to, which point of time you did it, which conversion rule you used, the number of objects that were exported, and more.

When the file is created, its CRS is checked against that of the binder's CRS. If they don't match, you must complete CRS Validation. For more information, see CRS Validation.
